Almond Joy Sheet Cake with RuPaul Flair: Custom Birthday Cake for Josh Lawson

When it came time to plan a birthday cake for St. Denis Medical star and all-around gem Josh Lawson, the brainstorming sesh felt like a mini “Snatch Game” of dessert ideas. There were laughs, opinions, and a whole lot of sweet deliberation. What would the flavor fantasy be? What décor would serve the most birthday realness?

The top three cake contenders were:

1. Chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream and chocolate ganache (classic, rich, a little sultry),

2. Hostess cupcake-inspired cake (nostalgia queen vibes), and

3. Almond Joy-inspired sheet cake (tropical, decadent, and, dare I say, a little unexpected).

👑 Enter: Laura, my coworker and reigning Idea Queen Extraordinaire, who had her heart set on the Almond Joy. Why? Not-so-secretly, she had dreams of that coconut buttercream filling dancing on her tastebuds. Now, Josh had initially leaned toward a Reese’s-inspired option (can’t blame a man for loving peanut butter), but with a little sweet talk and flair, Laura lip-synced for her life and convinced him to say yes to the coconut dress.

💋Final flavor decision: Almond Joy sheet cake with coconut filling, sliced almonds, coconut buttercream, and a luscious layer of ganache. Category is: Tropical Indulgence Couture!

👑 Now, for the lewk. I originally had a whole Amazon jungle vibe in mind—giving Josh’s adventurous spirit a nod with vines, flora, and wild elegance. But then Prell, my co-worker and Queen (lowkey cake décor whisperer), stepped in and said the magic words: Drag Race theme. And honey, just like that, I sissied that Pinterest search right into high gear.

With Drag Race being one of Josh’s fave shows, the switch in theme felt right. Think glitter, sass, a splash of camp, and details that whispered, “Shantay, you cake.” I even found the perfect site to create an edible image of RuPauls face here to place center stage on the cake - because if you're going Drag Race, you go all the way

And the final touch? The pièce de résistance? A custom cake topper that read, in true RuPaul fashion:

“Good luck—and don’t f* it up.”

Because what’s a Drag Race cake without a little drama and a reminder to slay?

🌟The true untucked moment came when Josh saw the cake—there was joy, emotion, and genuine gratitude. That’s the magic of intentional bakes: when flavor, design, and love all werk together in harmony.
