Chocolate, Ganache, and a Few Unexpected Guests

When Amy’s husband reached out and asked me to bake her birthday cake, it was what I call a “say less” moment. You know—the kind where you’re already preheating the oven before the conversation ends.

Amy runs the crafty department for the hit TV series St. Denis Medical and has been one of my biggest supporters—bringing my custom baked goods to set, featuring them for cast birthdays, and basically ensuring my treats have had their own behind-the-scenes career. She’s like the fairy godmother of snacks… but with a clipboard and production schedule.

The request? A double chocolate cake with chocolate ganache icing and filling. In other words, the chocolate lover’s dream—rich, indulgent, and perfect for someone as thoughtful and hardworking as Amy.

But the décor? That’s where the story takes a funny turn.

The inspiration came from  an unforgettable chapter of St. Denis Medical lore: the squirrel saga.  Last season, the squirrels on the lot decided crafty was their personal all-you-can-eat buffet. Don’t be fooled by their twitchy tails and cute faces—these weren’t Disney squirrels. These were tiny, furry bandits who could pull off a snack heist in broad daylight.

To make matters worse (or funnier, depending on how you look at it), some crew members fed them, which only  encouraged their snack raids.  Soon there were signs—and even stickers—reminding everyone to stop feeding the squirrels. It became an inside joke that bonded the crew… and inspired me to add a couple of squirrels mid-snack attack to Amy’s cake.

Baking this custom  fondant cake for Amy was pure joy. She’s one of those rare people who makes everyone feel cared for —whether it’s crafting a thoughtful menu for the crew, making space for my home-baked goods on her table, or encouraging new ideas. She’s kind, funny, and understands that feeding people well (humans, not squirrels) is its own kind of love.

Happy Birthday, Amy!!!—here’s to another year of chocolate, laughter, and squirrel-free snacking.
