๐August Birthday Cake Rush ๐
๐From The Lanai kitchen To Their Celebrations: August’s Birthday Cakes๐
This month, peanut butter and chocolate were the stars of the show. The first was for Sarah Stouffer, a dear friend of St. Denis Medical’s star Kayhun Kim. Sarah also happens to be someone I had the joy of working with on a Christmas movie years ago (A Cinderella Christmas — what a cozy little full-circle moment!). The cake was a deep, rich chocolate base, layered with silky chocolate ganache that melts in your mouth, and then covered with the dreamiest peanut butter buttercream you can imagine — light, creamy, and just the right amount of nutty. I decorated it with dainty gold sugar pearls and, of course, topped it with plenty of Reese’s cups because when peanut butter is the theme, you lean all the way in.
Not long after, Claire, the 2nd 2nd Assistant Director on St. Denis, ordered a quarter sheet cake. This one leaned classic but elegant — the kind of cake that feels timeless. I gave it a generous, old-fashioned edge piping (the kind that makes you want to swipe your finger along it when no one’s looking), added shimmering gold accents for a touch of celebration, and finished it off with delicate little swirls around the base. It had such a regal, feminine feel — like the cake equivalent of a vintage ball gown.
And then came one of my favorite twists of the month: actor Stephen Schneider’s household doubled up on the birthday sweets. His wife decided to treat herself (and honestly, isn’t that the best way to do birthdays?) with a “Matilda” cake — rich, chocolatey layers with that over-the-top, indulgent feel that makes you want to grab a fork and dive right in. It’s the kind of cake that feels playful and decadent all at once, a nod to that classic movie moment we all secretly wish we could re-create.
Stephen, on the other hand, went in a completely different direction for his own celebration. Instead of a traditional cake, he requested a jumbo cinnamon roll as his birthday centerpiece. Picture a cinnamon roll so oversized that it becomes the table’s main event — tender, buttery spirals packed with cinnamon-sugar and finished with a sweet glaze that settles perfectly into every swirl. One slice was practically a meal in itself, and I couldn’t love the idea more. There’s something so comforting and joyful about taking a childhood favorite and turning it into a birthday cake.
By the time I cleaned the last mixing bowl this month, my kitchen smelled like chocolate, cinnamon, and sugar, and my heart was full from all these celebrations. Every cake carried its own personality and story, and that’s what I love most — baking isn’t just about sweets, it’s about the people and memories tied to them.
Here’s to August birthdays, peanut butter cups, golden swirls, and cinnamon rolls the size of your dreams. If you’ve got a birthday coming up, I’d love to make something just as special for you — because every celebration deserves a cake (or cinnamon roll!) that feels made just for you.
