Turning Comedy into Cake: Celebrating Mekki Leeper with Buttercream & Funfetti πŸŽ‰

πŸŽ‰ HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEKKI!!! FROM ST. DENIS MEDICAL πŸŽ‰

This September, I had the joy (and challenge!) of baking a birthday cake for St. Denis Medical star Mekki Leeper. If you’ve watched the show, you know his character “Matt” has his fair share of quirky moments—but one of my favorites was when Matt broke out a full-on magic act for the talent show on Season 1 Ep13. It was unexpected, awkward, and completely hilarious… basically perfect birthday cake inspiration.

Every cake I make is special, but this one was a chance to get extra creative—and I couldn’t resist leveling up with a buttercream transfer for the cake dΓ©cor.

Frosting + Funny Business = Buttercream Transfer

To honor that magician moment, I found a still from the show, turned it into a cartoon rendering, and then recreated it on the cake using a buttercream transfer. Yes, you read that right—I basically painted with frosting. It involved mixing colors like I was back in art class, only this time the medium was sugar and the stakes were a lot tastier. Was it easy? Nope. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Flavor Check: Straight from the Birthday Star

When it came to flavor, I went straight to the source and asked Mekki what he loved most. His answer was as classic as it gets: vanilla buttercream. So I baked a Funfetti vanilla half-sheet cake—bright, fluffy, celebratory, and paired with creamy, smooth vanilla buttercream frosting. It was nostalgic but elevated, fun but timeless, and basically everything a birthday cake should be. Sometimes the simple choice really is the best.

The Reactions That Make It All Worth It

When the cast and crew gathered around to sing “Happy Birthday,” I was nervous and excited all at once. As soon as the song ended, Mekki looked at the cake, grinned, and said:

“Did Alli make this cake? I need a piece right now.”

That alone melted my baker’s heart. And then Ross, the first assistant director, followed up with a line that made me laugh just as much as the magic episode itself:

“Wait—this is one of Alli’s cakes? Okay, I’m not missing out. Cut me a slice, ASAP”

Moments like that ignite the spark of my love for baking. It’s not just flour and sugar—it’s about creating something that makes people smile, laugh, and celebrate together.

Why This Cake Was Special

For me, this cake wasn’t just about buttercream or Funfetti—it was about capturing a little piece of what makes Mekki so funny and memorable, and turning it into something everyone could enjoy. A cake that told a story, got a laugh, and tasted delicious all at once.
